With this in mind we have chosen all natural sanitary products that contain no harmful chemicals and are made from a sustainable natural cotton/bamboo plant base. Definitely a win for you and the planet. We have done extensive research to find natural sanitary products and we have put a selection of each in The Sisterhood Australia Starter Pack. Read about the brands we chose below.
Tsuno pads are made from a natural bamboo (not viscose, which means no harsh chemicals used to process it) and corn fiber top sheet, individually wrapped in biodegradable sleeves, and finally packaged in recyclable cardboard boxes. Bamboo is one of the most eco-friendly and sustainable fibers available due to its fast growth-rate, low demands on resources and natural resistance to pests and fungi. It is also super absorbent, breathable, soft and comfortable, antibacterial, and just generally amazing! There has also been no chlorine or dioxin bleach used in the manufacturing process. They are currently researching and aim to develop a 100% biodegradable product, however it is important to note, at this stage, the bottom layer is a breathable polyethylene film to ensure the pad is leak proof and does the job it's made to do efficiently, and will be until we can find a suitable alternative biodegradable material. Read more about Tsuno who are a social enterprise. 50% of their profits are donated to charities that focus on empowering women, with the main focus being education and menstrual support.
The good news is Organyc is a range of feminine hygiene products made with 100% pure organic cotton. This means Organyc tampons, pads and liners are as hypoallergenic, absorbent, breathable, soft and comfortable as you would expect cotton to be. The Organyc range is produced without the use of chlorine bleach, pesticides or other nasties such as crude oil derived polymers. This makes them healthier for the environment and healthier for you. This is Organyc's page so you can read about their philosophy and their range.
Each sanitary pad is individually wrapped.
The Sisterhood Australia has written a educational booklet about puberty and menstruation, with content that a young girl can easily understand. It is a colourful and educational tool that covers many questions that may not come up in Life Education at school.
